Dear Families,
We are already in the month of June and the students at Jefferson Elementary School have experienced a productive year. In addition to learning their subjects, each grade level has had extended and enriched experiences.
Kindergarten - classes received a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation for students to study culture and community through cooking and planting. They also studied creative movement.
1st Grade - studied Zumba and had workshops in addition to performing for the school.
2nd Grade - studied Square Dancing and healthy lifestyles, nutrition and learned how to play chess.
3rd Grade - studied Salsa and made musical instruments from Latin America. The children participated in the chess and the photography clubs.
4th Grade - participated in creating animated films through Jacob Burns. They also learned film making, including pre-production, production and post-production. The 4th graders had workshops in poetry and mask-making and they were involved in learning about African Dance.
5th Grade - studied film, visited Broadway, went to Manhattanville College with their families and learned Ballroom Dancing. The children were given mini lap-top computers and they were able to take them home every night so the students could do their homework.
Many of the students experienced teleconferencing and went on virtual trips from Minnesota to Chicago. The children also learned how to use Thinking Maps to increase their language and vocabulary. Everyone at Jefferson had an outstanding academic year.
