            NO JUNK FOOD WEEK

Jefferson School is again participating in a program
to educate and encourage your child to eat healthier.
This program is called "Fit Kids", which was developed
by the Westchester County Department of Health.
Jefferson School will be sponsoring a "No Junk Food
Week", which will begin on March 15 and continue
through March 19.

During the past two decades, the percentage of American
children aged six to eleven who are overweight has more
than doubled (from 7 to 15 percent), and the percentage
of adolescents aged 12 to 19 who are overweight has
tripled (from 5 to 15 percent).

During this week, we would like to encourage parent
and student participation by sending in healthy snacks.

Recommendations for Healthy Snacks
  • Fresh fruit - apples, frozen grapes, bananas, strawberries
  • Carrot sticks and celery sticks
  • Low fat yogurt
  • Graham crackers
  • Pretzels
  •  Popcorn with no butter
  • Baggies of cheerios, rice krispies, cornflakes
  • 100% fruit juice
  • Rice cakes
There will be some special events planned with healthier
eating and increasing heart healthy activities in mind.  Please
assist your child with completing the No Junk Food Contract
and return it to the teacher by March 22.  The class with the
most returned contracts, in each grade level, will receive a
sports pack filled with prizes!

This program is our way of being pro-active in addressing
the increasingly alarming epidemic of childhood obesity.
Parents are important role models for our children so your
participation in this program is vital to its success.

The window replacement project is almost complete .  Final touches will take place over the Spring Break.  We are waiting for our window shades.  All work will take place overnight so there will be no class disruption.

From the Principal

Dear Familes,

Hopefully we will soon luxuriate in bright
sunshine and warm weather.  this has been
a long winter and I look forward to the sights,
sounds, and smells of springtime.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are on March 10,
2010.  If you have not done so already or you
have not heard from the teacher and you wish to
have a conference, please feel free to contact your
teacher.  Conferences are from 1:00-3:15 pm.  Report
cards go home on Friday, March 19, 2010.  If for
some reason your child does not bring home his or
her report card, please be sure to contact the school
and the homeroom teacher will call you back.  You may
also e-mail your homeroom teacher.

There are many exciting activities scheduled.  The
faculty from Manhattanville College will visit Jefferson
classrooms to learn about the integration of technology
and the curricula.  We have Kindergarten registration
and student screening on March 22 through March 26,
2010.  Therefore, if you know anyone who has a child
who is going to kindergarten, please pass the word that
